It’s that time again already! The Southern Hemisphere’s biggest winter party is set to take Queenstown by storm this weekend, as the alpine resort celebrates the opening of the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival 2009.

This Friday marks the start of celebrations for the 35th birthday of the iconic festival, followed by a further nine days of fabulous and uniquely Queenstown events.

The events calendar boasts heaps of mountain action, including ski races, rail jams, night skiing, and dog races. The celebrations continue back in town with street parties, fireworks, live concerts, comedy, theatre, drag races, birdman action, jazz night, a ball and a great mix of internationally acclaimed performers and home-grown acts.

The festival kicks off this Friday 26 June 2009 with the opening party and fireworks on the lake front from 6pm-9pm. You don’t need a ticket to attend and events include spectacular fireworks, al fresco food stalls, and some awesome live music.

Also on Friday night, the Reading Cinema in Queenstown will be showing Warren Miller’s Children of Winter at 8:30pm, the largest action sports film on the planet. Or visit Memorial Hall for the 18th Lindauer Top Blokes Launch Party at 7pm. Tickets are $10 and you must be over 18 to attend. SKYCITY Queenstown Casino are also offering free live entertainment, featuring The Oysterman at 9pm.

The Queenstown Winter Festival runs from 26 June to 5 July 2009. Expect there to be crowds!
